Sita Sings the Blues
What would you do if your husband took a job in India…then divorced you by e-mail? Well, when it happened to her, animator Nina Paley created an animated film!

To commemorate International Animation Day 2009, we’ll be screening “Sita Sings the Blues” by independent animator Nina Paley.

Two screenings will be held on October 28th at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

International Animation Day is sponsored by the International Animated Film Association (www.asifa.net), an organization dedicated to furthering the art and appreciation of animated film.

The 1st Annual East Lansing

Zombie Day

What is it?

Zombie Day is a gathering of like-minded people for a great cause! Part Food Drive, Part Local Business Awareness, and part call to action for the community of East Lansing to stand firm to make Downtown East Lansing cool & relevant again!

Why are we doing it?

Food Drive? Rock concert? ZOMBIES??!! Why wouldn’t we do it?!?! Because 10 years ago, Downtown East Lansing was the center of an amazing Local Music Scene, and the place to be for our indie youth. We’re calling everyone to band together and support the shows, independent business, and help recreate the creative community that can make East Lansing cool again

How do I get involved?

  • Simple! Register for updates on Facebook –“Zombie Day East Lansing”, or register in the form below:
  • Come to REPLAY ENTERTAINMENT EXCHANGE in Downtown East Lansing on Saturday, May16th @Noon
  • Dress like a zombie. Face paint. Ripped clothes. Whatever you want that won’t terrify children or get you cuffed by the cops.
  • Bring your canned rations/Food donations and check in with your name and email address
  • Grab your fliers for a cause & then shamble around ARTFEST.
  • Come Back to REPLAY for a FREE rock show at 5:00pm
  • Those Zombies around at Night Fall can take part in a Zombie Walk down the famous strip in East Lansing. Guaranteed to be the creepiest thing you’ve ever seen in EL.
  • Most importantly, have FUN. That’s what this is all about after all.

Teeth @ B-Movie Beatdown!!!

teeth

A coming-of-age tale with a twist, Teeth takes a novel approach towards teen sexual angst. Sunny blonde Dawn (Jess Weixler, a Meryl Streep in the making) promotes abstinence at her high school. Her mother (Vivienne Benesch) is terminally ill, her half-brother (Nip/Tuck’s John Hensley) is a tattooed sociopath, and her stepfather (Lenny von Dohlen) does what he can to keep the household together. When Dawn meets doe-eyed transfer student Tobey (Hale Appleman), her celibacy vow is put to the test. Simultaneously, she starts to realize her anatomy differs from other girls. Though Dawn’s Austin environs recall the serene suburbs of Donnie Darko–except for the ominous smokestacks behind the family’s ranch house–her secret power brings her closer in line with Carrie. It’s a particularly feminine capability. When Carrie felt threatened, she used her mind as a weapon. In Dawn’s case, a certain physical anomaly comes into play: the vagina dentata of ancient mythology (Camille Paglia, author of Sexual Personae, served as a consultant on the film). At first, Dawn has no control over the situation and, like De Palma’s anti-heroine, she’s horrified. But actor-turned-director Mitchell Lichtenstein (Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet), son of artist Roy Lichtenstein, ends his debut on a very different note. Along the way, there’s satiric humor, squirm-inducing gore, and a star-making turn from Weixler, recipient of a special prize at Sundance for her “jaw-dropping performance.” Teeth is neither anti-male nor anti-female–as some detractors have claimed–but it’s definitely not for the squeamish or irony-impaired. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

“Ami (Minase Yashiro, in her film debut) is a tough but otherwise average high school girl, trying to lead a normal life. Her world comes crashing down when her brother and his friend are killed by ruthless bullies. As Ami tracks down the ringleader, she is surprised to discover the bullies’ association with a sinister ninja yakuza family. When she goes after her revenge, she soon finds herself in over her head and minus her left arm. Barely surviving, Ami escapes and seeks out shelter from two kindly garage mechanics. They take pity on her, fitting her with a high-powered machine gun where her arm used to be. She then teams up with the chainsaw-wielding mother (Asami) of her brother’s slain friend and together they unleash an unholy, non-stop, over-the-top kill fest against the equally creative machinery (drill bra, flying guillotine) of their relentless ninja enemies.”
I mean seriously, do I need to say anything else? We’ve been waiting to screen this movie at the Beatdown for MONTHS! If you miss this one, you’ll probably lock yourself into a dark room and cry for at least a few days. Don’t screw the pooch, get to this Beatdown.

Animation Night at Replay on April 16!!

April 14th, 2009
April 16, 2009
9:00 pmto10:30 pm

This month, Animation night at Replay is on Thursday, April 16th. The show starts at 9 p.m. Come on out and see the best animation we can find from old stuff your grandparents used to watch all the way to the cutting edge cartoons of tomorrow! And if you’re REALLY good, after the show, I’ll play the brand new stop-motion video for the Prodigy’s song “Warriors Dance”!

This week, I’ll also be showing a couple of the more trippy abstract films that make Ted’s sphincter clench like a vice when we see them at the festivals! But don’t worry, I’ve picked some short ones and I won’t be showing anything seizure inducing…unless you REALLY want to see them! 8)

Hope to see you there. :)
